Improved discrete imperialist competition algorithm for order scheduling of automated warehouses

•Two order scheduling strategies are analyzed and compared.•The improved DICA is applied to solve the multi-objective order scheduling problem.•Scheduling priority value is combined with characteristics of orders and customers.•A comparative analysis of the improved DAIC and GA is performed.•Reasonable suggestions for the order scheduling system are given.
