•SED theory was firstly applied for SMX adsorption on mineral adsorbent.•pH application range of volcanic rock was broadened to 5–11.•The different adsorption ability and mechanism between VR and PPy-VR was analyzed.•High-energy adsorption centers of PPy-VR was related to π-π EDA and ion exchange.
