What do phytonyms name? The definition of plant names in academic dictionaries

This research examines, with an multidisciplinary approach, the problems involved in the incorporation of common names of plants into lexicographic works. The work material from which the phytomytes are obtained, their etymological origin and the geographic reference is the Diccionario de Americanismo (2010), although the Diccionario de la Lengua Espanola (2014) has also been taken into account. After a selection of useful terms in this research, a lexicon is made with 1,259 entries that register 667 different plant names that name 877 taxa. The results of a quantitative analysis show that popular names of plants are not a single designation. This research wants to be a contribution from the dialectal lexicon and the botanical popular nomenclature towards the solution of this apparent confrontation between the needs of legislators, technicians, ethnographers and ethno-botanists. In addition, we try to solve the difficulty of lexicographically defining the names of plants in academic publications.
