•Hydrate formation under transient conditions is studied using a rock-flow cell.•Shear applied at restart contributes to hydrate breakup.•High subcooling in a low water cut system promotes the dry-hydrate formation.•If hydrates already exist, a shut-in/restart will not change the state of the system.
