Seismic isolation: A pathway to standardized advanced nuclear reactors

•Seismic load case has thwarted the deployment of standardized nuclear power plants because of the required site-specific engineering, regulatory review, and licensing.•Seismic isolation of advanced reactors is a pathway to standardization, aimed at re-use of a certified design and repeated procurement of equipment.•Standardization via seismic isolation is demonstrated using a MSR and a HTGR located at sites of differing seismic hazard.
