•The extrapolation of the NRC BWR H-content model leads to an overprediction for Swiss fuels.•A model for calculation of H-content for Swiss BWR has been developed for burnup up to 90 MWd/kgU.•A LOCA analysis, where the new correlation is used, leads to less conservative results.
