Residual displacements of reinforced concrete walls detailed with conventional steel and shape memory alloy rebars

•SMA walls analysed can achieve residual displacements less than the imposed limit.•Distribution of curvature was limited to the length of the SMA bar used.•Increasing the SMA bar reduces the residual displacements as a function of drift.•Axial load can suppress the formation of residual displacement.
