•Membrane distillation is an alternative method for ammonia recovery form HTL-WW.•Relatively high and stable flux is achieved at feed temperature of 60 °C.•The condensate contains high ammonium and low organic carbon concentrations.•The limit value for condensate recovery before wetting is 60%.•Surfactants play a major role in membrane wetting.
