Highly reversible lithium metal-organic battery enabled by a freestanding MXene interlayer

Due to the merits of abundant resources, environmental friendliness and rich functional groups, organic materials attract great interests as promising electrode materials for the next generation batteries. However, fast capacity decay caused by the high solubility of organic electrodes in liquid electrolyte impedes their development. Herein, free-standing MXene paper is introduced as an interlayer to overcome the issues for the first time. With the interlayer, the dissolution of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) cathode is blocked, which prevents the irreversible reaction between cathode and lithium metal anode. The configured cells exhibit significantly enhanced capacity retention. Moreover, the performance enhancing mechanism of the MXene interlayer is also probed. The facile strategy could be extended to other organic batteries systems such as Na/K/Zn/Ca et al.
