•We present an in-depth analysis of drivers of mobile work productivity among knowledge workers.•The primary key towards a productive travel time work episode is the predictability of conditions and the ability to equip oneself, highlighting the role of reliable information and planning.•Traveling context characteristics, as lack of privacy or connectivity, impact the choice of work task and the travel time use planning.•In addition interruptions and crowded spaces disrupt productive work episodes.
