Plants depend on multitudes of microorganisms both below and above ground. Although specific roles such as nitrogen fixation in root nodules are well studied, much remains to be explored about how plants assemble, maintain and use their microbiome. These issues are important for the health and resilience of plants and thus also for global issues, including climate resilience and food security. Michael Gross reports.
