•The presence of nickel-aluminide decreases the formation of S-Al2CuMg precipitates after artificially aging treatment.•The corrosion resistance of coatings containing nickel-aluminide is 64% higher than coatings without nickel-aluminide.•The presence of nickel-aluminide significantly reduces corrosion rate following artificial aging treatment.
