•Glycols are potentially good solvents for extracting guaiacol from alkanes.•DES with choline chloride + glycol are more selective for guaiacol than pure glycols.•Excess volumes are negative for guaiacol + glycol or DES mixtures.•Viscosity for guaiacol + solvent mixtures increase with longer glycol carbon-chain.
