•Integration of diverse food & nutrition security (FNS) data is a challenge.•We propose a generalizable workflow to build interoperable FNS data platforms.•We introduce interoperability criteria as conditions for data integration.•Information technology tools for automating workflow steps are discussed.•A case study linking branded food datasets reinforced the need for annotated data.
