•The density, viscosity, refractometric, conductivity studies were performed.•Ion-ion, ion-hydrophobic, hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions play key roles.•Both amino acids were found to be structure-breaker in aqueous BTEACl solutions.•Interactions were studied by NMR spectroscopy and computational study.•Interaction behavior prevails in (L-Cysteine+BTEACl+H2O) system.
