•Porosity creation resulted from mesogenetic dolomite dissolution.•Dissolution of Cambrian sulfates supplied the SO2-rich fluids that created porosity.•The influence of hydrothermal fluids was minimal for porosity generation.•Reservoirs with up to 39% porosity are found in the Quilitage Formation.
