•The ∼1070 m and 1060–1050 m a.s.l. shorelines formed <∼136 ka and 49–22 ka, respectively.•The changes of lake level are sensitive to climatic change in the Jilantai area.•The development of lakeshore of MIS 3a–LGM was likely a geomorphic response.
