•Mo-doped NiCo2Co4 was prepared in yolk-shell structure with a porous core.•The anode exhibited highly reversible capacity and excellent rate performance.•The pathway of Li+ transportation was shortening by yolk-shell structure.•Electrolyte infiltration was enhanced by providing more active surface.
