•Carbonization modified MIL-101 was prepared with non-polar surface.•Three N-containing functional groups were successfully introduced by N doping.•Functional groups adsorbed benzene through π-π interaction and hydrogen bond.•Pyridinic-N had the greatest effect on benzene adsorption among the functional groups.
