•Two iridium complexes exhibit efficient ECL comparable to [Ru(bpy)3]2+.•Radical stability and reactivity are the key factors affecting ECL.•Absolute ECL efficiencies are more applicable than the ones relative to [Ru(bpy)3]2+, especially in case of co-reactant systems.•The methodology to determine absolute ECL efficiencies is an essential tool for ECL investigation.
