Effects of defoliation frequencies on above- and belowground biodiversity and ecosystem processes in subtropical grasslands of southern Brazil

•Low defoliation frequency had positive effects on ecosystem processes related to primary productivity and detritivore activity.•Plant species composition differed between high and low defoliation treatments.•Low defoliation frequency support dominance of tussocks.•Soil biodiversity was not affected by defoliation frequency.
