Vegetation changes in the understory of nitrogen-sensitive temperate forests over the past 70 years

•Forest vegetation surveys from 1950 to 1976 were compared with surveys from 2017/18.•Nitrophilic species increased in the understory of nearly all examined forest types.•Changes between surveys are partly attributable to atmospheric N deposition.•Differences between forest types indicate an influence of historic land use.
