•Na5Y1-yLny(MoO4)4:Dy3+ phosphors were firstly synthesized via combustion method.•White emission was enhanced through partial Y3+ substitution with La3+ and Gd3+.•Excellent Na5Y1-yLny(MoO4)4:Dy3+ phosphors can be used in n-UV excited w-LEDs.
