•Different generations of PAMAM dendrimers were grafted in situ to silica.•The extraction performance-structure relationship of dendrimers was investigated.•The extraction mechanism of the PAMAM dendrimers were discussed.•The extraction performance of materials was compared with silica and C18.•Two online SPE-HPLC analytical methods were separately developed to detect trace PAHs and bisphenols.
