•We map Detroit’s gardens and explore links with demographics and gentrification.•Urban gardens do not appear to be associated with gentrification in Detroit.•Yet, gardens occur more often in burgeoning neighborhoods with fewer Black residents.•Community gardens cluster in neighborhoods with young, affluent, educated residents.•Gardening in Detroit may not be linked to gentrification, but it is still unequal.
