Trellis Coded Modulation with Orbital Angular Momentum

As an intrinsic property of the electromagnetic wave, the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) can be utilized in the future mobile communications. When OAM is applied in the traditional modulation and coding, the joint coding and modulation with the OAM dimension is required, which is considered as the research on the schemes of the OAM multiplex transmission. In this paper, the Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) with OAM is proposed based on physical property of OAM, which can be used for the optimization of the joint coding and modulation with OAM. In addition, according to whether or not the OAM is utilized as the independent dimension with orthogonality, two categories of OAM orthogonal and non-orthogonal models are established. Moreover, the detailed models of orthogonal domain and index domain are discussed and analyzed. The performances of Bit Error Rate (BER) and transmission capacity are evaluated, which confirms the capability of the proposed TCM in the corresponding signal processing with OAM.
