Introduction

There are reports of mobile electronic solutions for data transfer in the emergency services [1–3]. There are no published reports of mobile data solutions being used in paediatric critical care transport.

Aims

Description of our automated electronic patient data collection during transport which can be remotely visualised in real time, transmitted to electronic patient records and saved to our database for research.

Methods

We have collected electronic patient observations data during transports since 2017 at Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS). This data is displayed on a monitor by the bedside and is then transmitted to a cloud service via a mobile device associated with the monitor. It can be visualised in real time remotely, sent to the electronic patient records and saved to a database as minutely data point’s (figure 1). We have retrospectively reviewed this data.

Results

We have saved over 1800 patient episodes with numerical and waveform data at one second frequency to our database and transmitted approximately 540,000 individual numerical observations via HL7 messages to Trust Interface Engine and patient records.

Discussion

In adult medicine, automated electronic early warning systems that inform clinical teams have shown reduced mortality in after implementation in two NHS hospitals. There is work on going to attempt to translate this success into a paediatric model to reduce critical care transfers. The first step in this process for paediatric critical care transport is the reliable capture and storage of this data for analysis. We are the only UK paediatric critical care transport team collecting this data.

Conclusion

We have shown that it is feasible to transmit electronic patient observations during paediatric critical care transport for real time visualisation, documentation and research.
