The Adapted Questionnaire of Work Motivation for People Living with Chronic Mental Disorders” (CAMT): Validation in Mexican People with Bipolar Disorder

Job performance is one of the most challenging aspects faced by people living with chronic mental disorders. It has been observed that good performance in this area could aid in improving both clinical and psychosocial situations. Theoretical models have considered work motivation as one of the predictor variables of success in getting and keeping a job. In the field of mental health there are few instruments for measuring work motivation, therefore the objective of this study was to report the psychometric properties of the Adapted Questionnaire of Work Motivation for People Living with a Chronic Mental Disorder (“Cuestionario Adaptado de Motivación para el Trabajo” or CAMT) in a sample of Mexican subjects diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The CAMT was applied to 157 subjects; the discrimination index, reliability, and construct validity were evaluated; and cut-off points were calculated. This study was approved by local ethics and research committees. Only two items produced a discrimination index lower than the reference point suggested in the literature. A four-factor solution was obtained, and a Kuder-Richardson coefficient of 0.821 was observed on the general scale. More than 90% of the sample was distributed within the normal values of the four subscales. The Mexican version of the CAMT is a reliable instrument to evaluate work motivation in people with bipolar disorder. More studies are needed to increase knowledge about the performance of the questionnaire in other populations.
