Implementation and impact of dedicated inpatient genetic counselors in a children 's hospital

While the role of genetic counselors in the provision of outpatient genetics services is well-established, there is significant variability in the presence and role of dedicated genetic counselors in the inpatient setting. This is likely due to several factors, including inpatient testing policies that limit the ability to send genetic tests with longer turnaround times, the inability of genetic counselors to bill for inpatient work, and a relatively low inpatient consult burden that allowed for genetic counselors with primarily outpatient work to assist the inpatient geneticist as needed.
