•A “peeled pitaya-like” heterostructure is cleverly developed for enhanced PTT.•Small CDs acted as “antennas” absorbing NIR and transfer energy to PCN-224.•Accelerated cell apoptosis induced by the mitochondria targeting of PCDTs.•PCDTs shows a good fluorescence imaging, biocompatibility, and biodegradability.
