•We review mixed methods intervention studies in emotional and behavioral disorders.•Studies benefited from the use of mixed methods in evaluating complex interventions.•The reporting quality was acceptable, but some aspects could be improved.•The rationales for using a mixed methods approach lacked clarity and accuracy.•The integration outcomes should have been reported in more precise detail.
