•A new cadmium-based coordination network is synthesized.•sql-Cd exhibits the second-highest ethanol uptake (62.5 wt%) at ambient conditions.•Ethanol with 99% purity can be directly obtained.•sql-Cd can be combined with chitosan to form a filter film.
