Non-identical parallel machines batch processing problem with release dates, due dates and variable maintenance activity to minimize total tardiness

•Batch processing scheduling with release dates and maintenance tasks is considered.•An original MILP model is proposed to optimally solve small-scale instances.•A heuristic is developed to assign jobs to batches on different machines.•Two meta-heuristic approaches are proposed to solve this problem with different sizes.
