•Cities are classified into seven types using K-means to highlight the attribute.•Estimating city-level CO2 combined nighttime light data with socioeconomic data.•Estimation results were improved compared with using nighttime light data only.•Differences in CO2 emissions between different type cities are obvious.•Quantifying contributions of population density, urbanization, and GDP per capita.
