•An hydroalcoholic extract from the dry outer scales of Allium cepa var. Tropea-IGP was investigated for its chemical and biological properties.•Phenolics are the main components.•The extract shows high lipase inhibition effect.•The extract prevents lipid hydrolysis and has a protective effect against phospholipase.
