•BLZSC cathode is prepared via a template method coupled with chemical activation.•BLZSC presents a high SSA of 2288.03 m g−1 and superior capacitive capability.•CZS anode is prepared via a sulfuration method and shows a fine rate performance.•CZS//BLZSC LIC achieves a high energy density of 158 Wh kg−1.•CZS//BLZSC LIC exhibits a capacitance retention of 79.19% after 8000 cycles.
