•Twenty-two pesticide residues were found in vegetables from Chile and Mexico.•More pesticide residues were detected in Mexico (10) than in Chile (3).•Spinach, tomato, and chard pesticide residues exceeded European Union regulations.•Chlorpyrifos and dimethoate constitute a high risk for human health in Mexico.
