•p-hydroxy benzaldehyde (HD) exerted anti-colitis effects through its metabolite.•p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HA) was identified as the active metabolite of p-hydroxy benzaldehyde responsible for anti-UC activity.•HA could improve colitis by inhibiting inflammatory response and repairing the intestinal barrier via ERβ.
