Salinity evolution of aquitard porewater associated with transgression and regression in the coastal plain of Eastern China

•Holocene seawater was observed widespread along the coastline of eastern China.•Evolution of saline porewater is attributed to transgression and regression cycle.•Transport of porewater is controlled by diffusion in natural conditions.•Porewater salinity is impacted by advective flow in areas of extensive pumping.
