Performance of satellite-based and reanalysis precipitation products under multi-temporal scales and extreme weather in mainland China

•The overall accuracy of the SPEs in summer exceeds that of the RPEs, and vice versa in winter.•A weaker amplitude of the RPEs’ hourly precipitation was observed, resulting in an inferior accuracy for extreme heavy precipitation.•The summer bias is generally attributed to false events, the winter bias originates from false and miss events.•The accuracy of each product has improved in the last decade, particularly during winter.
