Food preference assay in male and female C57BL/6 mice

•Appetite and discrimination between ordinary foods is diminished after chronic consumption of energy-dense diet.•Food preference is scaled to relative differences in food energy-density.•Food preference assay can be used to detect adaptations to energy-dense diet.•Dietary adaptations in food preference are sexually dimorphic and macronutrient specific in C57BL6 mice.
