•Different treatment techniques for i-graphite waste were surveyed comprehensively.•The whole process from nuclear graphite fabrication to treatment was analyzed.•Plasma, thermal treatment and molten salt oxidation were promising methods.•SHS combined with thermal treatment could be a more effective method.
