Lactone-fused naphthopyran UV photoswitches with fast bleaching in the dark

•Photochromic furan and lactone fused naphthopyrans were prepared in just 2 steps.•UV irradiation generates a single red colored species.•The coloured species fade in the dark, at room temperature, in few seconds.•Faster thermal decay than unfused naphthopyrans.
