The potential for bike riding across entire cities: Quantifying spatial variation in interest in bike riding

•Most people living in Victoria are interested in riding a bike, but only when protected infrastructure is provided.•Interest in riding a bike was comparable between women and men.•The Interested but Concerned group was the largest group across all age groups, however decreased with an increase in age.•Despite low participation, interest in bike riding was high in the outer regions of the Greater Melbourne area.
