•The precipitating agent affected the activity of Fe catalyzed coal pyrolysis.•Fe catalyst (Fe-X4) prepared with KOH showed the best catalytic activity.•Mg and Ba prevented the combination of Si and Fe in coal to form Si-O-Fe.
