•Workplace measures against COVID-19 by companies/organizations may protect workers from a major depressive episode (MDE).•Worry about workplace measures was associated with MDE among employees in a 13-month follow-up in the COVID-19 epidemic.•Addressing employees' worry about workplace measures may mitigate the risk of MDEs in the COVID-19 epidemic.
