•We evaluated the influence of scaling-and-root-planing (SRP) with adjuvant aPDT on bacterial counts of in periodontitis patients.•Counts of P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans were assessed.•One aPDT application with SRP is ineffective in reducing bacterial counts.
