The association of mitochondrial DNA copy number with incident mental disorders in women: A population-based follow-up study

•The changes of mtDNA-CN in peripheral blood are associated with mental disorders.•Whether mtDNA-CN is associated with the incidence of mental disorders remains unclear.•In univariate Cox regression, lower mtDNA-CN is associated with a higher risk of mental disorders.•The association between mtDNA-CN and mental disorders was confounded by other factors.
