Phillygenin activates PKR/eIF2α pathway and induces stress granule to exert anti-avian infectious bronchitis virus

•Phillygenin has high binding activity with IBV spike protein, non-structural protein 9 and main protease by molecular docking simulation.•Phillygenin inhibits IBV replication by reducing IBV N mRNA transcription, N protein synthesis and the release of virus particles.•Phillygenin disturbs multiple stages of the IBV life cycle, including viral adsorption, invasion, internalization and release in cell.•Phillygenin activates PKR/eIF2α pathway and induces stress granule formation to exert anti-IBV.
