miRNAs in the regulation of mTOR signaling and host immune responses: The case of Leishmania infections

•miRNAs are important regulators of different cell signaling/responses.•mTOR signaling could be correlated with the pathogenesis of Leishmania.•The crosstalk between miRNAs and mTOR may clarify various aspects of the pathogenicity and biology of Leishmania infections.•Targeting miRNAs that modulate mTOR by small molecules and RNA-based therapeutics could be new treatment options.
